Weh Island

Island of Weh (or We) or also known as Sabang island, a small volcanic island located northwest of Sumatra Island. This island was once connected to the island of Sumatra, but then separated by the sea after the last volcanic eruption in the Pleistocene era. This island is located in the Andaman Sea. The largest city on Pulau Weh is Sabang, the westernmost city in Indonesia. The Andaman Sea is situated on a small active tectonic plate. Complex systems of faults and volcanic arc islands have been formed along the ocean by the movement of tectonic plates. This island is Indonesia most Western Island, a part Aceh Province.

Weh Island

So for Indonesia geopolitically, Weh Island is very strategic, because it is directly adjacent to other countries such as India, Malaysia and Thailand and is an international shipping channel for ships that will enter and leave Indonesian territory from the west.

This island stretches for 15 kilometers (10 miles) at the northernmost tip of Sumatra. This island is only a small island with an area of 120.7 km², but has many mountains. The island's highest peak is a fumaroles volcano with a height of 617 meters (2024 feet). The last eruption of this mountain is thought to have occurred during the Pleistocene era. As a result of this eruption, part of this mountain was destroyed, it was filled with the sea and a separate island was formed.

At a depth of nine meters (29.5 feet) near the town of Sabang, underwater fumaroles emerge from the ocean floor.[5] Volcanic cones can be found in the forest. There are 3 solfatara areas: one is located 750 meters southeast of the summit and the other is located 5 km and 11.5 km northwest of the summit on the west coast of Lhok Perialakot bay.

There are four small islands that surround Pulau Weh: Klah, Rubiah, Seulako, and Rondo. Among the four, Rubiah is famous as a diving tourism spot because of its coral reefs. Rubiah is a stopover place for Indonesian Muslims who carry out the sea pilgrimage before and after going to Mecca.
